What is Design Tech.png

Design and Technology is an innovative and inspiring subject where children use their creativity and imagination to design and make products. Understanding the role of Design and Technology in society supports children to solve real and relevant problems considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Children at Dale acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and skills which can be applied in the wider curriculum; and in turn they are encouraged to utilise cross curricular skills such as mathematics, science, computing and art in order for their design product to be a success.

In Design and Technology at Dale children will acquire the technical knowledge necessary to build structures, explore and use mechanisms, develop food products and create a product using textiles. They will use creativity and innovation to design high quality prototypes and products based on a set criterion, which has a clear purpose and intended user. Children will learn to make and construct items with an intended purpose in mind, selecting the tools, techniques and materials needed to shape, assemble and join materials effectively. They will also learn to evaluate by being constructively critical of the work of their own and others.

Design and Technology nurtures children’s natural curiosity. Our children are encouraged to have and develop their own ideas, be resourceful and take risks, which builds resilience through problem solving and critical thinking.

Through exploration and evaluation of design technology our children develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Therefore, strengthening cultural capital by developing their knowledge of the world and the possibility of opportunities for them in the future.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. To view the full programme, please click on the progression document above.
