What is History.png

A high-quality History education should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. It helps them to gain an understanding of the past; the impact that it has on life for them today and helps them to gain knowledge and understanding of not only Britain’s past but that of the wider world.

As pupils study History at Dale, they will begin to understand chronology, the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change and how society has learnt from mistakes of the past. History at Dale also supports pupils to build their understanding of these concepts as they journey through the different time periods they are taught. They begin to have an awareness of local and national history and how it has helped to shape this nation and the local community.

History is all around us – from buildings we see to the way we operate in society today. It is vital in helping pupils to understand their place in the world. At Dale, we teach History so that pupils can gain a historical perspective between local, regional, national and international history; between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history. Teaching history enables pupils to learn about chronology and the key vocabulary related to history; make links to life today, and they can use this knowledge to make connections to other subject areas studied whilst at Dale. We aim to ‘plant the seed’ so that pupils are inspired to engage in wider reading and research to learn more about the time period they are studying.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. To view the full programme, please click on the progression document above.
